Some Digital Goodness

If you've been around my blog for a while you might have seen some of my dabbling in Digital Scrapbooking. (rolling my eyes. I'm horrible at it. lol.) But I do think it's fun! I really need to do something with all the pictures I take with my kiddos, and with three small ones there is no way I could ever do real scrapbooking and not have my paper and pictures end up all over the house. So digital it is!

One program I use is called My Memories. It's actually really cool. Way cheaper than Photoshop, and I REALLY like how it has all the customizing options on the side, as well as being able to have your folders open on the other side so you can easily add pictures without always having to have an "open" box covering your project. Basically, the layout is really nice.

See:
:) I think I'll print this out and give it to the man to put in his office at work.

Ok, enough for a sales pitch. Not really, I just like it and I'm telling you why. :) Anyway, onto the good stuff... Every few weeks they come out with some different free downloads that I can share with all of you. Sometimes I don't really like them, and sometimes I'm too lazy to blog about them, but this week they are actually REALLY cute! So... I am going to share them with you so you can go download them. You don't have to buy the program to use them. They are compatible with any software, though you can download them to use with this software.

This time around, the downloads are bracket books!

Kit 1:

Kit 2:

Kit 3:

These links are only good for 2 weeks (from Monday) and then they will be something else. Just so if you find this later and these aren't there, you'll know.

If you are interested... these can be downloaded right into the software and then you can customize them any way you want. Otherwise they are just a jpg that you can print and use, but you won't be able to manipulate them in a different program. SO, and this is an affiliate link and I will get benefits if you use this code, but if you want to buy the software, you can get $10 OFF plus $10 CREDIT to their digital store for more goodies IF you use this code at checkout: STMMMS96392

The software comes with tons of goodies already, so you never need to buy anything else if you don't want to. and if you want to know, it costs $39.97 at regular price.

Anyway, I have some good tips and tutorials for how to put these together, but I don't know if anyone is interested in that. If you are I can post them - so LET ME KNOW. Because otherwise I won't. :) And maybe I'll share some more goodies in a few weeks!

All-righty then. I hope everyone is having a great week!
Let me know if you do digital scrapbooking.
I would love any tips on what works for you.
I am creatively challenged when it comes to that. ;)

Lots of Hugs and an Update on the Blog

I need to write everyone back and tell you THANK YOU for your comments on yesterdays post. I feel SO much better! I think writing about it helped me more than making the quilt, though that's not for me anyway, I'm really excited to send it off in the mail (tomorrow hopefully). I think the thing I have always had the hardest time from, is when people try to act like they like you but obviously don't. No one has to like anyone, so don't fake like you do. Anyway, that's another story that I'm not going to go into on this blog. lol. :)

On a happier note, I finally cleaned up and updated my Made It page! :) Right now it's only lists and links (I want to add some mosaics of everything), but wow! I've made way more stuff than I thought I have. I think there are a few more items that I have hidden in some other posts, so they aren't linked, but anyway. It's fun to look back at everything. (as well as highly amusing to see the silly things I made and remembering how I thought I was doing such an awesome job with my tutorials and pictures and posts. I'm sure I'll feel the same way in 2 years from now about what I'm doing right now. :)

On a sad note, I cannot find my bee blocks! (My Moody Blues blocks, the Candy Land blocks from do.Good Stitches, all my blocks from the 3x6 Bee and 4x5 Bee - they are all going into different projects - one I NEED to finish this week, and of course the rest are very soon. Not good.) In Utah I had them all in one fabric bag, and now I don't know where that is. I thought I had opened up all my sewing boxes, but perhapss not. I also kind of remembering seeing the bag already though, so it makes me super confused because it's not anywhere where I would have put it! Ahhh! I will be spending the rest of my morning searching for that bag. Wish me luck!

And to end on a happy note again, I made my first paper pieced Letters! SO fun! Those small pieces to curve out the corners are craziness though!

Attempting my first paper pieced letters. So far so good... Just one more to go. :)

I can't wait to get this blocked in so it looks a lot better. I totally forgot to reverse my patterns before I printed them though. oops. I ended up tracing the lines on the back of the paper for the "S", but I didn't on the "T" which means that It ended up a lot closer to the "O" than I wanted because my extra space is on the left side of the "T" instead of the right. Oh well, I love them. I'll be sharing more about this project in the next couple of days... if I can find my bee blocks! lol. I will either way.

Toys anyone?! :)
maybe maybe I'll make up a whole alphabet of these. Or maybe just show you how to make your own alphabet. :)

What have you been up to lately? Are you getting ready for August?!
Yikes this summer has gone by fast.

Rainbow Me Happy Quilt

This was one of my Finish-A-Long projects for the third quarter over at Quilter in the Gap! I'm so glad I finished something! My original post for the third quarter is here.

I'm going to share this over at Quilt Story on Tuesday... and possibly more linkies (just check my sidebar).

I'm so happy this quilt is finished! I really enjoyed making it, and at the same time, I had a really hard time making it.

DSC_0578

Before I go into the story of it, here are the stats:

DSC_0581

Quilt finishes at: 40.5" x 54"
All charms are from the different charm swaps I've participated in
the binding is an old insect binding, I think my mom gave it to me a long time ago.
the back is minky dimple dot - yellow and turquoise.
pieced, quilted and bound by me.

DSC_0594

I decided to make this quilt when I found out that a little boy from our old ward was diagnosed with leukemia. What horrible news, I didn't even know how to respond when my friends told me about it. It makes my heart ache to think about it still. Especially now that we are so far away, the only thing I could think of to do was make a quilt. I think partially for me because I had this feeling of helplessness but wanted to do something. The boy is just younger than Jackson's and they were in nursery together. He is the sweetest little boy.

DSC_0597

For some reason I had such an emotional struggle with this quilt from the very beginning. (I know friends and people from that old neighborhood read my blog sometimes, so I hope I don't offend anyone in what I'm going to write, but I feel like I should be honest with my feelings.) The family is very kind and generous and we really enjoy them, they also helped us a lot, and are grateful for that. As can happen sometimes in a ward or church group, you are thrown together with people that  you probably wouldn't be friends with otherwise. There were wonderful people in the ward, and we love and hope to stay friends with all of them, but I just want to be honest and say that there were some people in the ward that we personally felt very awkward around. There was always that "fake frienship" feeling with our interactions (and I'm not saying that this family was one of those). For some reason while making this quilt, I was flooded with the mix of emotions that I have from everyone in that old ward, good and bad, happy and sad. I kept thinking about how when we left we felt some people were glad we were going (though it wasn't as bad as Springville where when someone called me to schedule an appointment with the bishop and I told him we weren't in the ward anymore his reaction was, "GREAT! I'll let him know!". Ok. goodbye to you too.) We did get offers for help and are so grateful for them, but one person called, "someone said you needed help with this... do you really need help? ..." I guess they sounded put out by it. Neil said, "no, don't worry about it" their chipper response, "Awesome! Well, just let us know!" I don't know if that says something about us or them. ?. ;) I don't say this to put anyone down. It's just the fact that we had interactions like that when we left (and I'm not saying that everyone should have been in tears either. We miss our friends, and we're still friends and we all love each other, but it also stinks to know that some people seemed over joyed to be rid of us.) Ok, enough with that.

DSC_0605

So making this quilt was a mix of all those emotions. I kept wondering if I should even make the quilt. "Are they going to enjoy it? Will they be grateful for the time and effort I put into it? Will they end up donating it and getting rid of it? Am I stupid for even trying this?" I really struggled with my confidence in making this, and that's never happened like this before. I've never made anything like this before either though, so maybe I'd have these feelings anyway. I don't know. Thinking about the boy is what kept me going with it. It's for him, so who cares what any one else will think right?!

DSC_0583

As the quilt came together, I could tell on the days that I was having these struggles, that it really affected the quality of workmanship that went into it. For instance, I basted the minky wrong, which then led to puckers in my quilting. blah. Nothing too serious, but it's frustrating. My quilting isn't amazing either. But I still like it and think it's ok for not having FMQed in a long time. It always amazes me how your feelings or what kind of a day you're having really effects how you sew. Lesson learned: DON'T Quilt if your having an off day! I've met a lot of people that have noticed the same thing. ;)

DSC_0591

Onto a happy note, I did enjoy making this. Everything with this quilt had one end goal in mind: that it will be something cheerful and fun for a little boy to look at and enjoy. I picked bright colors, with lots of shapes, textures or pictures. I did a swirly star quilting. I love Hunter's quilt and looking for the stars in it, and thought those would be fun here. I wanted to put a solid, darker/bolder binding on the quilt, but decided on the insect fabric. What boy doesn't enjoy grasshoppers, bees, dragonflies, etc?! Ok, there are butterflies and lady bugs on it too, but those are insects as well, so they can still be boyish. ;)

DSC_0600

I hope that sending this off will be a release for me and I will be able to let go of all those negative emotions. And more than that, I hope that it really will be a happy rainbow-y quilt that will brighten this little boys day and help carry him through his months of therapy and treatment.

We love you "T"!
Love, the Bohns.

Winterkist Fun and The Charming Travelers!

First I'll say that I kind of am really bad sometimes at staying on top of things. Like The Charming Travelers. oops. Luckily there were some awesome people who helped me by filling out the form, and then a little searching and I was able to find both packs! Wahoo! (secretly it makes me really nervous that I'm going to flop and have the lame project... why do I always have to try something new? I can't ever seem to do something that's a guaranteed success...) Anyway, make sure to visit all the stops on the hop! I know you'll find something you'll like. (and you can give me some courtesy pats on the back as you fly past my post. lol. J/k. I think it will all be fine.)

from blank pages... a linky party

I don't know that I've ever had my blog name be a post title. kind of weird but it makes me smile at the same time. lol.

Do you know what I've been thinking about lately? lots, and I mean LOTS, of blank pages that I've filled but have never turned into anything but a filled page. I chose this title for my blog because of all the ideas I squiggle down in my notebooks, and my love for turing them into real patterns or items. But I'm afraid my ideas always seem to be way more numerous than the amount of time I have to work on them. I've been thinking about bringing them out into the light (aka, sharing them on my blog) and seeing if I can't find the motivation to start some of them. To actually make the journey of starting from blank pages... and ending up with something awesome! (or horrible) :)

Then I started wondering about everyone else. What have you put on YOUR blank pages??? I think sometimes it's just inspiration we find, on Pinterest perhaps? Or maybe you have an idea that's been floating around in your head for years, but you've never had the courage to jot it down and simply start putting it together. A beautiful stack of fabrics by chance? Maybe a flower in your backyard? I don't know that I could ever limit the amount of things that inspire me.

My sister, whose blog is private, recently shared all of these activities she did with her kiddos from pins she liked on Pinterest. I was kind of wowed by everything she actually did. I'm not saying that it's because she doesn't do anything, but because I have so many things I've pinned and have never done anything with! (Though I definitely have pins that I go back to over and over again.) So with that in mind, and with all my other thoughts... blah, blah blah. I decided that it would be fun, or at least I would have so much fun making a linky party for everyone's blank pages! :)

I know there are already so many link up's for works in progress, and finished items, UFO items, and everything in between, but this is a "BEGINNING" linking party! Whether it's just to share those awesome projects you only dream about doing one day (items you've pinned on pinterest), or maybe it's that hidden project that you just need a few extra ounces of motivation to help you start it, I would love to see them all! :) If it's a secret, show some sneak peeks! Or maybe a stack of fabric that you are still contemplating a project for. There are so many things that inspire us to create, and I think we often share the process or the finish of it, but why not celebrate the beginning. I love sitting in front of my fabric and dream of all the things I could make with it. Sure I should probably spend more time actually making them, but a girls got to dream too. :)

So to celebrate the Joy of new ideas, or recreating old ideas,

Welcome to the New
from blank pages...  Linky Party!

from blank pages... linky party

Where:

When:

  • every Thursday (I figure some fun inspirational excitement just might be the thing we need to help push us to the weekend)
  • The linky is open until Sunday night, so you have a few days to join me. Be sure to come back before then! Otherwise I hope I'll see you (again) next Thursday! :)
What:

  • anything that inspires a new-to-you project, a new project you want to start or have just recently started, that pile of fabric you've been dreaming up ideas for, sneak peeks of your exciting new project, a project you want to start but would like some advice with the details, etc.

How:

  • Write up a blog post and link it below. Please make sure to tell us a little bit about it. Unless it's a surprise, I want to know what you're planning on doing! :) If you need some ideas, this will be a great way to hopefully get a lot of feedback and input. (if you are sharing something by someone else, please remember to give credit to the creator where credit is due.)
  • Be sure to link back to this post and grab a button (below) to put in your post or on your sidebar so others can join in the fun too.

Ready, set, GO:

ok, I'll start. :)

I have so many scribbles and designs and patterns that fill my sketchbooks. One that I've been thinking about lately is from this page...

DSC_0584
(ok, some scribbles are from my children too)

Origianlly I came up with this for a quilt idea for the Little Quilts - Sew, Vote, Swap group (I think), but it never happened. obviously. I don't date all my ideas, but a few pages earlier I dated one August 2011, so about a year old. I am hoping to get this into fabric really soon! ...more like sooner than you think! (did you see my sneak peek from yesterdays' W.i.P. post?!) I'm excited to look back and have an excuse to start making my projects for reals. :) I'll keep you updated!

So what is on your list of items you want to make?

oh, and don't forget to grab a button! :)

W.i.P. Wednesday {7/25/12}

I am getting SO close!!! ...to finishing things. :) It's been quiet on the blog, which seems to be the case all around blog land lately, but that doesn't mean we haven't been having fun. We've been having LOTS of fun!!

Last weekend we drove to Waterloo with some good friends and went to a concert in the park with some world famous BBQ! Yum! I haven't laughed so much in a long time! I hope our *new* friends don't think I'm a weirdo. ;) lol. Then Saturday was Sumner Days and we went to the parade, the boys and I saw Brave in the $1 theater, (actually it's only 99 cents! Isn't that awesome? New releases for less than a buck!! We will be going to a lot of movies I think.) :) and a bunch of other stuff. I don't even remember. We've been in a heat wave the last few days and it's wiping my memory... it's SO. HOT! Luckily it's supposed to be over today.

OH! and Potty Training! Hunter is doing awesome! He picked Sunday to be his first day and he's doing fantastic! There are a few accidents still and power struggles are coming to a minimum! We are so proud of him! :) *The idea of going to preschool soon is a real motivation keeper!* The other day he asked me though, "When am I going to be done with underwear?" as if underwear was a phase like diapers. When I told him he'll be wearing underwear forever, and that his grandpa still wears underwear, his eyes got SO big. "Nooo." I told him maybe when he was 90 he would wear diapers again. He just laughed at that and thought I was silly. He's so funny.

Ok, I didn't mean for this to turn into such a family post, it was going to be all pictures, so anyway, here are the pictures! :)

Rainbow Me Happy Quilt
This quilt is so random. Had I wanted it to be "beautiful" I probably would have quilted it totally different, but I think the stars are so fun and hopefully something fun to look at and search for with the rainbow thread. The binding is covered in insects: grasshoppers, lady bugs, butterflies, bees, dragonflies, etc. I hope it will all make it fun to look at and use. :)

Here's how I think sometimes.... plus some fabric and coupons! and a party.

The other day I kind of went overboard eating the peanut m&m's. I thought to myself, ”I just ate my weight in m&m's. ... That would be so gross.” I really didn't eat that many. While this was going on I was looking at my fabric and then thought, ”what if I won my weight in fabric?! That would be awesome.” I started calculating... ” if 1 yard weighs roughly 6 ounces, that would be... roughly 357 yards of fabric!” Now that might also be gross, but I would still take it!

What would you do if you won your weight in fabric? I think I would sell it, well some of it (that would be worth $3,570 if it was $10 a yard!) and pay off some debts, buy a mini van, or maybe a dryer and a lawnmower. Perhaps save it for those days when I just want to buy fabric. (buying fabric in and of itself is fun, even if it just sits on your shelf waiting to be used, would you agree?! heehee.) :)

Anyway, there's one of my recent amusing thoughts I've had. I figured you might enjoy thinking about that too. :)

P.s. What fabrics/collections would you want?
(i'm not even going to try to answer that!) Lol.

oh, and while I'm on the topic of fabric (but when am I not?) Check out what is at Hancock Fabrics?

Crafty Chloe by Heather Ross!
I borrowed this pic from Colleen on Flickr. Hope you don't mind! ;)

This is Heather Ross! It's based off the Crafty Chloe book and it's cute! The pink doll fabric is kind of scary, but I love the rest of it. ;)

and guess what, someone listed a coupon to use at Hancock's if you shop online: SIZZLING10
 for 10% off!!

AND I don't know if you have ever shopped through Ebates, but I do and I love it! You can get another 4% cash back if you start at Ebates and follow their link to Hancock Fabrics (search for Hancock in the search field and it will bring up the store with the link.) (this is an affiliate link, fyi. I think we both get $5 if you sign up and make a purchase. use it or don't.) :)

I also go through Ebates whenever I shop at Fabric.com. They have a good percentage cash back too, and it's a nice discount to add to whatever coupon I'm using as well. Some people have problems with Fabric.com, but I never have. Ok, sometimes they cut my fabric too big (ok. I don't mind.) or they give me some extra fabric I didn't ask for. Sometimes it's a trade, but it's never been with a fabric I was dying for, mostly just something I wanted while shopping. They have a fantastic return policy! You could return your whole order if you wanted to! And I can't forget the free shipping on any order of $35. Ok. I'm really not trying to sell you on shopping there, that is simply all the reasons why I like it. :)

Anyway, there it is. save a little money, buy some more fabric. heehee.

p.s. I'm going to start a new linky party around here. I think maybe next week (on Thursdays). I know, not another linky. This one is different though, so I hope you'll join me!! I'll give you more info later on. It should be a lot of fun!

W.i.P. Wednesday {7/18/2012}

There is SO MUCH going on! ok, coming up. I am SO excited! I've been doing a ton of behind the scenes stuff and I'm kind of peeing my pants! lol. I love all the people I'm working with, and hope to be able to share it all with you soon! All I can say is that it's going to be...

:)

I've also got a little paper piecing prep going on...

This is the first time I've laid out a design like this, it's kind of fun and is definitely opening up a million possibilities in my brain for other projects.

Part of this prep stuff is for an upcoming blog hop that is going to be awesome! It's happening over at Quiet Play. (and will be all of August.)

 Practically Paper Piecing

I just met Kristy, honestly, two days ago on Flickr, and she has mad skills. Check out these umbrellas! I think they're to die for! And I LOVE her red herring block! (it's free!) I'm so happy she invited me to come play with her even though we just met and she uses words I don't know the meaning to. (like squizz? what's that? lol. She's from Australia. go figure. ;) j/k.)

I do have some other projects I'm finishing up and working on as well.

Like organizing my fabric. We are not using this shoe hanger and I decided it would be a good place to keep my favorites, instead of hiding them away in bins, so maybe I'll actually use them one of these days.

Shoe hangers for fabrics. We'll see how this works.
Central Park anyone?! I think I've cut into two of these fabrics and have had them for well over a year or more. I think if I had an endless supply of this I would use it in EVERYTHING.
Oh wait, I mean Henna Garden I would use that in everything. Lifetime supply anyone?! (as in, anyone want to supply me with more of this?!) ;)

Stars and swirls with rainbow thread
I also finished quilting this lovely piece of rainbow. I even used rainbow thread. Tip: Don't sew/quilt if you are having an off day. It DEFINITELY shows in your work. :( I didn't do the best basting job, which led to a few puckers in the quilting. My worst experience ever. Though I guess it's good to say that's the worst job I've done so far, since it's not too terrible. Ok, I think there will be some unpicking in some parts, but hopefully not too much of it. I'll share more of what I learned with this one once it's finished and bound.

I did kind of scream when I received an email from Rhonda at Quilter in the Gap (ok, from The Fat Quarter Shop) saying I won the $75 gift certificate! WAHOO! THANK YOU!!! Does life get any better than this?! If only they carried Central Park  Henna Garden. heehee. I don't know what I'm going to spend it on. There are WAY too many awesome fabrics out there...

I need to start working on a block for Marika. As well as Polaroid blocks for this group! These will be perfect for the I-Spy sleeping bags I want to make for the kiddos! :) Hooray! I can't believe all the blocks are that are being made! They are SO cute! You should definitely go check it out!

I've also been doing some more unpacking, organizing, putting things away, cleaning. (and putting boxes back downstairs.) It's been nice! Batman finally came over as well!! HOORAY! The bats are finally leaving us! I will be able to do the laundry again (not that I love that, but I love that I don't have to wait for Neil to go get it and start a load when I need it. He's been my laundry slave. hee. He's awesome!)

What are you working on? Are you too busy playing and going on vacations? I wish. New job means no vacation time for Neil. plus it's hot. We are hoping to go to Nauvoo, IL this weekend though! The Nauvoo Pageant is going on right now until August 4th and I'm kind of excited to see what it's all about! Those crazy Mormons. ;) lol.

Ok, now I am off to make lunch, take a nap, sew, and play lots and lots with my awesome kiddos. They crack me up.

100 Quilts for Kids meets Quilting for a Cause

Can you believe that there are already 98 members in the Quilting for a Cause group?! I love this quilting community! You all are awesome!! :) THANK YOU! (there are already a lot of beautiful blocks in the group pool for Marika too. It's so exciting! :)

Swim, Bike, Quilt

Last night I was browsing Flickr and noticed Katie's picture for her annual 100 Quilts for Kids event. You make a quilt, donate it, share pictures in the flickr group, win prizes. It's a fun event for a great cause.

Well it made me think about Melinda who said she has extra Bee blocks she won't be using. A few other people chimed in with blocks too, and I have been wondering what we could combine them for. Well, I think 100 Quilts for Kids is the perfect excuse to use them!

I am volunteering to collect everyone's blocks and turn them into quilts. If you have even one extra block that you have lying around, will you stop by this discussion and let me know?! If you comment on this post to volunteer I'm going to ask you to go there anyway (so make sure you go there too). It will be easier for me to keep track of everyone who wants to help and not miss sending my address to someone who comments elsewhere.

If you want to help put blocks together too, come say so, I'm happy to get all the help I can!

Thanks in advance!!

There and Back

I haven't done any hand stitching for a while, so when I started finishing this project off today I couldn't wait to take a picture to link it up to Katie's Handmade Parade at There & Back! Have you been doing any hand stitching lately? If so, go link it up! It's open all weekend. :)

EEEkkkkk! I'm so excited I'm totally becoming a dork about this. :)

Shorts on the Line

shorts on the line button

Guess what? I made some shorts!! :) And you can read all about my experience over at Small & Friendly today. I don't know what time the post will be up, so if it's not there, make sure to check back later. As I'm a bit new to sewing clothes, I decided to share some things I learned rather than pretend that I know exactly what I'm doing.

I didn't even realize it until I was out taking pictures of my shorts/capris, but it made me laugh when I realized that I actually have a line to hang my shorts on and that is what the event is called! I'm a little slow sometimes, but it makes me happy. (that I could hang my shorts on the line for the Shorts on the Line event. not being slow.) :)

I also have made some other shorts in preparation for this, that I will be sharing later. just so you are fore warned. more clothing sewing on the way. ;)
